Redesigned iPad with Facial Recognition Slated for 2018

Redesigned

The iPad Pro 3 with Face ID is said to have a screen size that's similar to that of the 10.5-inch iPad Pro. Face ID will reportedly replace the home button. Bloomberg said Apple also wants to slim down the bezels around the sides and above and below the screen, which means it might be a slate that's nearly entirely a display. An Apple spokeswoman declined comment. Would Face ID and a new bezel-less display be enough on their own to upgrade?

Now the iPad may be having something of a comeback.

Apple reported during its earnings call last week that iPad revenue rose 14% to $4.8 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter, with an 11% increase in the number of units sold.

Gordon and Hosmer both win another Gold Glove
Cincinnati Reds catcher Tucker Barnhart has been named victor of the National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award for his position. Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman is a Gold Glove victor for the first time in his career.

The iPad itself is enjoying a bit of a renaissance this year, thanks largely to the launch of the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and the new, affordable 9.7-inch iPad. Earlier in 2017, Apple released a cheaper version priced at $329 to boost sales. Apple did the same thing with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus this year. It is much more hard to produce large quantities of OLED panels than it is to manufacture LCDs.

However, the media outlet's sources also said that "technical and financial constraints make that unlikely". (I think I'd value that more than Face ID, personally.) Bloomberg estimates that the launch is about a year out, so we might not see it until fall 2018, and the report warns that Face ID integration could be nixed due to supply issues between now and then. Early reception has been positive for the feature, which also allows for payment authentication and sending Animojis, an animated emoji based on a user's facial movements and speech. Bloomberg said a different model will, meaning it might not carry the "iPad Pro" moniker. The new iPad, however, is not likely to use an OLED display like the iPhone X, and will instead stick with a traditional LCD screen. However, the report says that the new iPads will also drop the Home button/Touch ID, something that KGI's recent report didn't mention.
