U.S. sets end for temporary residency program for Nicaraguans

The Department of Homeland Security has ended Temporary Protected Status for Nicaragua, meaning that the 2,500 Nicaraguans living in the USA under that special status have 14 months to leave the country.

"The decision to end TPS status for Nicaragua is part of Trump's racist drive to force millions of people of color underground, into jails and out of the country".

Hondurans and Nicaraguans were given the protected status in response to Hurricane Mitch in 1998. "They are the fabric of our communities, and our economies and our industries", said Maria Rodriguez of the Florida Immigrant Coalition.

She said the lives of thousands of Nicaraguan families who "help make the United States vibrant" would be disrupted and that both the US and Nicaragua would be harmed. Haitians status is set to expire in January 2018, affecting about 50,000 people, majority in Florida, while Sanvadorans' status expires in March 2018, affecting almost 200,000 people.

The other countries with TPS designations are El Salvador, Haiti, Nepal, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

They called for TPS to be extended at 18-month intervals, as the current law requires, until Congress hammers out a legal fix. Haitians affected by the decision number 46,000.

The advocates also pointed to decisions due in several weeks from homeland security on TPS for people from El Salvador and Haiti, calling on Duke to extend protections without delay. "And in fact by not renewing the Temporary Protected Status. they have actually made matters worse", Rodriguez said.

There is a push by some close to Trump to get at least another six-month extension for Haitians.

Yemen's Houthi fire missile at Saudi Arabia's Riyadh
According to videos published on social media, smoke could be seen rising near Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport. A senior Yemeni air force official told CNN that the claims that Saudi Arabia intercepted the ballistic missile is false.

Tillerson's recommendations, which were not made public according to the Washington Post, could adversely impact not just TPS recipients, but their family members.

Local advocate Francisco Portillo, president of the Honduran group Francisco Morazán, said immigration organizations will keep fighting to win legalization for Honduran TPS holders.

"I'm not leaving. No matter what, I'm not leaving" said Osario, who has been in the USA for 26 years, the last 19 as a TPS holder.

"We do hope and encourage Congress to look at this and find a solution", the official added. "They've been getting working and they have 275,000 citizen children".

Ben Cardin of Maryland and the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Monday, before the decision on Nicaragua and Honduras was announced.

"I have never been so uneasy as I am now", Flores told Al Jazeera. If they don't comply, they will be considered undocumented migrants and could face deportation.

BuzzFeed News previously reported that years after the USA designated El Salvador and Honduras for TPS, only residual effects of the natural disasters exist, but they have been compounded by unemployment and gang violence.

Other nationalities affected by TPS include about 200,000 Salvadorans, whose status is scheduled to end on March 9, 2018 and 50,000 Haitians, whose status is scheduled to end January 22, 2018.
