Former Trump campaign official, Manafort, to remain under house arrest

Paul Manafort Seeks Expanded Release, Offers Properties, Insurance as Collateral

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort on Saturday offered up his Trump Tower apartment in New York City and other properties as a guarantee he will not flee the country as part of a court filing in which his lawyers asked he be granted more freedom to travel between his homes and businesses.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said Monday that she is prepared to modify the conditions of Manafort and Gates' release - but indicated she does not yet have the information she needs to approve a new bail package. They have pleaded not guilty.

The federal prosecutors, however, said they can't tell the properties' actual values, and his Palm Beach Gardens home could be worth a quarter-million dollars less than Manafort claims.

Mr Thomas said the security concerns of detainees had been taken into account, with increased measures put in place at the other facilities.

Jackson's original intention was to lift the home confinement but ordered that both men stay away from transportation facilities and continue to be tracked by a Global Positioning System monitor, she said, but said she will "keep an open mind".

Prosecutors cited the phone and multiple passports in saying that Manafort posed a risk of fleeing the US after his October 27 indictment on charges that he and his right-hand man, Rick Gates, concealed their work as agents of Ukraine, laundered millions of dollars and hid offshore accounts.

The men entered the courtroom separately with their lawyers and did not speak during Monday's bond hearing, though Gates at one point quietly conferred with his lawyer after a judge asked about his consulting practice. Those amounts reflect money the men would have to forfeit if they failed to return to court as required. The decision is expected to be reached prior to Manafort and Gates' next court appearance in December where a trial date will be determined. He would not be able to apply for a new passport (his three passports have been confiscated). The prosecutors noted he held three passports and traveled overseas with a phone and email registered under an alias. This doesn't show a "heightened potential for risk of flight", they said. They said the $18 million in assets that prosecutors seek to seize if he's convicted "would wipe out a substantial portion of Mr. Manafort's wealth accumulated over a lifetime of work". And Manafort ended up with three passports because he had two - with one he sent away for foreign visa applications - then lost the first and applied for a third, the lawyer said.
