Broadcom is reportedly exploring a massive acquisition of $80 billion Qualcomm

The biggest ever takeover of a chipmaker could be brewing.

Semiconductor giant Broadcom is exploring a possible acquisition of $80 billion Qualcomm, according to a Bloomberg News report citing people familiar with the matter.

A Qualcomm spokeswoman declined to comment. No final decisions have been made and there's no guarantee a deal will go ahead. The potential offer is a premium of 27.6 percent to Qualcomm's Thursday close. Broadcom stock, meanwhile, is trading up almost 6.5 percent.

Shares of Qualcomm surged roughly 15% on the news, while Broadcom's stock climbed more than 3%.

Formerly known as Avago Technologies, Broadcom Limited was created a year ago after Singapore-based Avago acquired Broadcom Corporation for $37 billion.

The $70-per-share price values Qualcomm at $103.2 billion.

More: Don't want an iPhone 8 or iPhone X? It is now incorporated in Singapore and co-headquartered there and in San Jose, California. Since then, though, smartphone sales growth has slowed and Intel has succeeded in placing its modems in some iPhone models.

Qualcomm and Apple have been embroiled in a dispute over royalties that has landed the two corporations in court.

At issue between Qualcomm and Apple are licensing fees the chipmaker charges for patents that cover the basics of how mobile phone systems work.

Regulators are still reviewing Qualcomm's $38.1 billion proposed acquisition of NXP Semiconductors for $38.1 billion. The deal is facing regulatory examination in Europe and opposition from some shareholders including activist hedge fund firm Elliott Management Corp., which has argued the offer undervalues NXP. The chipmaker countersued the Cupertino-based company in April, sought injunctions to halt iPhone sales in the U.S. and China, and filed a lawsuit over copyright infringement. Qualcomm, a major supplier of chips for wireless handsets, was up 14 percent.

Such a deal would cap an ongoing consolidation of the semiconductor industry.
