Extra Vacation For Nonsmokers

Japanese company gives six extra paid leaves to non-smokers

Mr Asuka hopes the scheme will create an incentive for the company's staff to quit smoking.

Smoking at work will cost you more than a week of precious vacation time at one Japanese company.

Some nonsmoking employees had complained they were working more than their colleagues who stepped out for a cigarette, according to The Telegraph.

Coupled with the time employees took to commute from the office's 29th floor to the smoking area in the building's basement, employees spend about 40 minutes each day away from their desks for smoke breaks, Piala spokesman Hirotaka Matsushima said, according to CNN.

A Japanese company will give its non-smoking employees an additional six days off to promote fairness and simultaneously acknowledge the amount of time smokers use to take smoke breaks.

The company has introduced a paid leave allowance to non-smokers, giving them an extra six days off per year.

Kurdish parties opposed to Barzani report attacks on offices overnight
He blamed the central government in Baghdad, which had dismissed the Kurdish vote as illegal, accusing it of escalating tensions. He has said he would accept only a cancellation of the referendum and respect for the country's constitution.

As per a study by World Health Organisation and US Cancer Institute, smoking is costing Dollars 1 trillion to the world economy, which is way more than global revenues from tobacco taxes.

Unsurprisingly, staffers who don't smoke have been pleased with the bonus time.

One of those new non-smokers, Shun Shinbaba, 25, told CNNMoney he used to smoke a pack of cigarettes every two days, and that he plans to use his newfound vacation time to play tennis.

More companies are expected to regulate in-house smoking as the government is reinforcing measures to prevent secondhand smoking ahead of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Employees have been quick to take advantage. But curbing tobacco use in Japan will likely be hard, as it was in the U.S. Original efforts by the country's health ministry to ban indoor smoking in restaurants were scaled back after lobbyists pressured politicians.
