Sprint: Not Clear Talks Are Off with T-Mo, Says CNBC's Faber

SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son Presents First Quarter Earnings

The pair had reached a broad agreement to integrate T-Mobile and Sprint - the third- and fourth-largest carriers in the USA - and were ironing out such details as the ownership ratio. The two companies have been in talks for months, and Softbank had hoped to combine the two companies as early as 2013.

Japan's SoftBank Group Corp is planning to break off negotiations on a merger between subsidiary Sprint Corp and T-Mobile US Inc due to a failure to agree on ownership of the combined company, Nikkei reported on Monday.

Deutsche Telekom allegedly insisted on a controlling stake in the new firm. Softbank's board reportedly voted on Friday not to give up control of the combined company and therefore to call off merger negotiations.

The two firms had held talks in 2014 on a merger but ended discussions in the face of opposition from U.S. regulators. Sprint shares fell 9 percent following a report from the Nikkei that Softbank might be backing off from a potential agreement; T-Mobile shares fell 5 percent.

SoftBank chief executive Masayoshi Son, who was among the first businessmen to meet President Donald Trump after his election victory past year, had been reportedly pushing for the tie-up as part of his effort to invest $50 billion in business and job-creation in the United States.

Apart from offering free Netflix streaming to subscribers (as T-Mobile has done), the two second-tier telcos have not made their presence felt in streaming video.
