BJP to celebrate Nov 8 as 'anti-blackmoney day'

The big news Gujarat elections are on December 9 and 14 and nine other top stories

The Narendra Modi government faced severe criticism for the sudden decision to ban high denomination notes on November 8 past year.

The meeting was attended by Azad, O Brien, Yadav, Communist Party of India (CPI) Member of Parliament D. Raja, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Member of Parliament Kanimozhi and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Member of Parliament Satish Mishra. We shall be highlighting the moves taken by our government in this direction. "The goal of this amendment was to curb the purchase of gold and jewellery for conversion of black money".

The special investigation team (SIT) to go into black money, which was directed by the Supreme Court in 2011 and was not acted upon by the previous UPA government, was formed by the NDA, the Finance Minister said. "The PM should apologise to the nation", they said. So, for entry into the lawful system, you are liable to pay tax.

"Agreements with Mauritius and Cyprus that allowed round tripping of money have been reworked". It was a huge step for squeezing cash economy, cash-based transactions and widened the tax base. "This displays their inadequate understanding", said the minister.

Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad told the media here, "Possibly, this is the first time that a decision announced by the Prime Minister had to be changed 135 times".

Asked whether the Prime Minister would participate in the campaign, Jaitley said the details were being worked out.

Lashing out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for celebrating November 8 as "Anti-Black Money Day", Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that the day should be mourned rather than celebrated. Several economists, including non-Indians, have repeatedly slammed the move and claimed that it was one of the reasons for the slowing pace of India's economy - a charge that the BJP has assiduously rejected. "I can quite understand their discomfort".

Could London's T-Charge be the end for toxic fumes?
Businesses can use the T-charge checker developed by Transport for London (TfL) to check how they will be affected. London Mayor Sadiq Khan yesterday introduced a £10 "T-charge" on older, more polluting vehicles in the capital.

"Congress had adequate opportunity to be in power, and I can't recollect a single significant step that they ever took against black money", said Jaitley. "It is, therefore, clear that this would never be on the political agenda of the Congress". "Mere entry of cash into the system does not legitimise it". It has an anonymous odour and anyone can use it.

He asked the BJP: "How much black money have they been able to unearth because of demonetisation?". "Eighteen lakh people have been found to have deposited money disproportionate to their source of income".

He also said that confiscation of the money was never the object to the demonetisation.

The Congress questioned the BJP over its decision to "celebrate the first anniversary of note ban".

The announcement came a day after the Congress said it will observe November 8 as Black Day and hold protests across the country. This is not a one-off campaign. Jaitley added that those who had destroyed the country were delivering sermons now.

"The PM remains in arrogant denial of the hardship inflicted on people of country by his reckless decision", Sharma said. "By provisioning now, we want to strengthen the banks by capital adequacy under which small and medium enterprises will get required credit".
