Child, 2, crushed to death becomes eighth victim of recalled Ikea drawers

8th child reported killed by recalled Ikea dresser

Last year, Ikea recalled its Malm dresser, a low-priced piece of furniture that was cited in the deaths of three small children, due to it tipping over. Jozef is the eighth child to die by an unsecured IKEA dresser, according to the Philadelphia Enquirer, which has extensively followed the cases.

A company spokeswoman said it was unclear how numerous recalled dressers were still in use. "Our hearts go out to the affected family, and we offer our honest condolences during this most hard time". The model that reportedly killed Dudek had three drawers.

An IKEA Malm dresser that can tip over when a toddler opens one of the drawers and tries to climb on it has led to another death.

After the first two deaths in 2014, the company issued a notice offering free anchoring kits; after the third toddler, a 22-month-old boy from Minnesota, was killed in Feburary 2016 - the third death in two years - the company issued a full recall.

The furniture item can be unstable if it is not anchored to a wall, the report said.

Mann, whose firm represented three of these families, said more deaths could occur if these products aren't taken out of homes completely.

Marouane Fellaini has also drawn praise from manager Jose Mourinho but De Bruyne says the rivalry among the Belgians has not intensified just yet.

Ikea's efforts included press releases, national news coverage and social media advertisement, among other communication methods. Ikea added that it has "worked hard to make participation in the recall as easy as possible for consumers. If a consumer is unable to bring the product back to the store, Ikea will arrange to pick it up at their home". Still, a large number of consumer safety groups - including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Consumer Federation of America - are not satisfied that these changes are enough to fully combat the risks they pose to children.

Ikea recalled a total of 29 million bureaus sold in the United States a year ago after the products failed industry safety tests because they could fall over when unattached to a wall.

Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Elliot Kaye, left, watches a demonstration of how an Ikea dresser can tip and fall on a child during a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington, Tuesday, June 28, 2016.

However, the attorneys for the Dudek family accused IKEA of not widely publicizing the recall.

The non-profit Kids In Danger told ABC News that fix kits or refunds had been issued for as little as 3% of the units that had been sold, leaving millions of Malm dressers as "ticking land mines in a child's bedroom".
