Google Celebrates Singer Selena Quintanilla's Music And Legacy With An Animated Doodle (Video)

October 17, 1989 marks the day of Selena's first album release with Capital EMI, self titled "Selena", which would lead to five more albums.

"Widely popular across the Texas/Mexico border since the 1800s, Selena y Los Dinos' infectious brand of Tejano music popularized the genre to audiences globally", writes Google Doodles Global Marketing Lead, Perla Campos on the Google Doodle Blog.

Her breakthrough year was 1987, as Selena won female vocalist of the year and performer of the year honors at the Tejano Music Awards.

Suzette provided revealing character nuances that really helped bring the animation and Selena's story to life.

"I hope that people will look at this Google Doodle and realize that Selena is still relevant to us as Latinos", her sister says.

The hashtag #Selena was trending on Twitter early Tuesday as fans of Quintanilla lauded the Google Doodle as "long overdue and well-deserved".

Campos joined the Google Doodle team full-time two years ago, and soon began working on an illustration that did Selena justice. Selena's death was sparked after her family suspected Saldívar of stealing money. She was sentenced to spend at least 30 years in prison.

Google Doodle along with Quintanilla family has made a virtual show on Google's Art & Culture site.

Though the Tejano singer may be gone, her legacy will never be forgotten.

She added, "It's incredible that Selena's legacy grows even larger with time".

In her professional life, Campos said she's used to being the only Latina in the room. She is among the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers and also ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all-time.

"Selena has always transcended cultural boundaries, and having this Doodle featuring a strong, Latina woman on the homepage of Google around the world is a ideal example [of] that", Suzette Quintanilla, the late singer's sister, said in a statement.
