Israel jets under fire from Syria retaliate with bombing raid near Damascus

He called it the first incident of Syrian forces targeting Israeli planes since the civil war began in 2011.

The Israeli aerial attack that knocked out a Russian-made Syrian anti-aircraft battery on Monday was unusual both for its timing and its substance.

In July, Netanyahu said a cease-fire agreement in southern Syria, brokered by the U.S. and Russian Federation at the G20 Summit in Germany, perpetuated the presence of Iranian forces near Israel.

On Monday morning, the Syrian air defense battery fired an interceptor missile at Israeli reconnaissance planes.

Israeli Defense Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus told reporters that Shoigu will "get a full briefing on the matter". All Israeli aircraft returned to base safely and a few hours later responded by launching four bombs towards the same battery, destroying it. Syrian anti-aircraft missiles were launched at Israeli warplanes over Syria in March.

An Israeli army spokesman said Israeli planes were conducting routine reconnaissance over Lebanon near the Syrian border when an anti-aircraft missile was launched at the Israeli jets.

Analysts ascribed the former to Syrian dictator Bashar Assad's battlefield successes, which may have prompted him to take a more aggressive approach toward Israel.

"The Syrian regime is responsible for the anti-aircraft fire".

Following the airstrike, the Syrian military warned Israel of "dangerous consequences for its repeated attempts of aggression", in a statement published in official state media.

There was no immediate comment from Syria which, while an old enemy of Israel, has rarely traded blows with it directly since a 1974 ceasefire ended their last conventional war.

Israel has largely stayed out of the fighting in Syria, but has occasionally carried out strikes on Syrian military positions.

On the other side, Russia, Iran and Hezbollah back Assad forces.

A few minutes later, the IDF spokesperson called a special conference of Israeli military correspondents, which, besides as an account of the operation itself, was meant to send a message to Damascus that Yerushalayim has no interest in escalating the situation, and that on completion of the retaliation Israel's role in the matter was over.
