They had to face a horde of Gurung's supporters, who fired at the police and managed to kill Sub Inspector Amitabh Mullick along with injuring two other officials. A few GJM supporters, too, received injuries in the firing.

Additional director general (law and order) Anuj Sharma told reporters in Kolkata that the police had specific information that Gurung and the group loyal to him were hiding near Patlebas, a stronghold of the GJM chief. "Several police vehicles passed through the area but none stopped to help", said a member of the Gurung-led GJM faction. We had sent them a letter earlier as well but they did not respond. State BJP president Dilip Ghosh, while attending a rally in West Midnapore district, said: "We are not supporting anyone in the Hills".

The clashes went on for hours.

Sharma said, during the clashes, Gurung and his close associates fled to the neighbouring state of Sikkim. "If I need to die, I will do so before the people", he had said. The camp was continuing for a couple of months, and Gurung himself used to stay there. The arms haul conclusively establishes his links with insurgent groups and Maoists, he added. Sharma said a cornered Gurung was trying to foment trouble in the hills again. Police also recovered a huge a cache of arms following the clash.
