Three skydivers die after suspected mid-air collision in Australia

Three people died yesterday in what is believed to be a mid-air skydiving collision, with one of the victims found in someone's garden.

Police and emergency services are at the scene of a skydiving incident at Alexander Drive at Mission Beach.

Mission Beach is located halfway between Cairns and Townsville in Northern Queensland and is a popular destination for backpackers travelling down Australia's East Coast.

The skydive was a 50th birthday present for Mrs Pike from her husband and children, according to the Courier Mail.

Mission Beach mother of eight Kerri Pike, 50, has been confirmed as one of three victims in a freak skydiving accident in Northern Queensland.

"You could see one chute was tangled and it wasn't opening", said the witness who asked not to be named.

Skydiving is a popular tourist activity in the area, with numerous backpackers who travel the Queensland coast stopping by Mission Beach.

Operations of skydives have been suspended while the authorities conduct their investigation.

'One of the deceased was a highly experienced instructor who had completed thousands of jumps and was completing a solo jump.

The others, another instructor and a customer, were jumping as a tandem pair, said the company organising the jump, Skydiving Australia, in a statement.
