Paris to Ban Gas-Powered Vehicles a Decade Ahead of Schedule

A ban on petrol-fuelled vehicles marks a radical escalation of policy in the world's most visited city

Paris city officials have announced plans to ban all gas and diesel vehicles from the city by 2030.

Paris is set to ban all petrol and diesel-fueled cars by 2030.

"This is about planning for the long term with a strategy that will reduce greenhouse gases", said Christophe Najdovski, head of transport policy in the administration of mayor Anne Hidalgo.

On the heels of France and the United Kingdom announcing plans to phase out sales of combustion-engined cars by 2040, the state of California is mulling a similar move much earlier than the 2040 target date, .

In recent months, French Ecology Minister Nicolas Hulot prohibits sale of all petrol and diesel-fueled vehicles across country by 2040, explaining that y plan to reach target of zero carbon emissions in 2050.

Oxford, England, recently announced plans to ban non-electric cars from parts of the city by 2020.

Although it may seem incredibly hard for North Americans to imagine such a ban, many Parisians do not own a auto.

Paris City Hall unveiled its vision in a statement this week, the latest in a series of bold initiatives created to reduce carbon emissions. Many Parisians prefer to use vehicles such as public transport, bicycles instead of owning cars.

Paris has faced rising air pollution in the last few years. Drivers behind the wheel of cars older than 20 years will face fines unless registered as an approved classic. "If we want to achieve this, it implies that the end of diesel and gasoline should take place several years in advance in urban areas, and particularly in big cities". The deadline for those cars is 2024, which is when the city will play host to the Olympic games. Accounting for more than 40% of the total market, diesel cars have been pointed out as a major source of pollutants and NOx emissions.
