Rupp bursts clear to claim rare home Chicago Marathon win

Galen Rupp Is Better Prepared For The Marathon Than Ever

Rupp pulled away in the race during the 23rd mile.

Defending champion Abel Kirui crossed the line 28 seconds behind in second place, with fellow Kenyan Bernard Kipyego taking third spot. He won the Olympic Trials Marathon in February 2016 in his debut, then claimed Olympic bronze in Rio de Janeiro and finished second in the 2017 Boston Marathon in April.

The 31-year-old from Portland, running in only his fourth marathon, clocked two hours, nine minutes and 20 seconds to take the victory after finishing second in the Boston Marathon six months ago. It is the first time since 2002 an American has won the men's Chicago Marathon.

Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba pushed toward a course-record pace nearly from the start to win the women's side of the Marathon in 2:18:31. "I worked very hard for this". I really wanted to wait.

The big question now will be whether enough backbench Conservative MPs sign a letter calling for a leadership election. Under the party's rules, a leadership race can be triggered if at least 48 of those MPs express their support.

Kenya's Dennis Kimetto, world record holder from his 2014 Berlin Marathon triumph in 2:02:57 and the 2013 Chicago champion, led at the halfway mark in 1:05:49 but began limping soon after and by 25km was off the pace for good.

Rupp is a three-time U.S. Olympian. The last American-born runner to win the men's race was Greg Meyer in 1982.

"I ran without a pacemaker and It was hard to break a record, but I am pleased with the race and the result today". Her sub-2:21 clocking is a course record for Americans.

Kosgei hung on for second place in 2:20:22 as United States' superb day continued with third place for Jordan Hasay in 2:20.57. This is now the first time Americans have finished top three in both the men's and women's races at the Chicago Marathon since 1985.
