Renewables now provide a quarter of the world's power

Canada's renewable energy growth projections scaled back after Ontario scraps clean energy program: Report

The US and India are also expected to drive renewables growth.

For the first time ever, solar photovoltaics (PV) additions to the grid rose faster than any other fuel, surpassing the net growth in coal and boosting renewables to account for nearly two-thirds of net new power capacity around the world a year ago.

The US is to be the second-largest growth market for renewables despite uncertainties about the policy. It could potentially increase its renewable capacity as quickly as the US. At this rate, renewables are expected to provide 30 percent of power generation by 2022.

The report forecasts out the next five years of renewable energy growth, a short time-frame that is easier to project than some forecasts-like, say, the Energy Information Agency-that are routinely criticized.

"It's not just this (Ontario) renewables program, it's the carbon pricing program, the coal phase out, a whole plethora of programs that are squeezing natural gas margins", said Dave Sawyer, an economist at EnviroEconomics in Ottawa. As a whole, renewables represented almost two-thirds of new electricity capacity additions past year, far outshining coal and natural gas growth.

The institution established after the first major oil crisis in 1973 said 165 gigawatts of renewables were completed a year ago, which was two-thirds of the net expansion in electricity supply.

Oklahoma State at Texas Tech
During the bye week, coach Mike Gundy's squad must clean up some of the issues that popped up against the Red Raiders. Right before halftime, Tech scored a field goal to tighten the gap to 21-17 with Oklahoma State still in the lead.

"In fact, China already exceeded its 2020 solar PV target three years ahead of time and is set to achieve its onshore wind target in 2019", it added. It was responsible for 41 per cent of global renewable additions.

Historically, the IEA has significantly underestimated growth in renewables, notably solar PV and its newly renamed report "Renewables 2017" (formerly titled Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report) is an attempt to redress fundamental failings over the last decade of forecasts. Upward trends in China and India mostly drove the increase.

"The message is very clear: Competition is driving cost down at a pace which is much faster than it was in the past", said Dr. Paolo Frankl, head of IEA's renewable energy division, on a call with reporters.

"The IEA renewables report affirms the remarkable success story of renewable energy, which we are proud to be part of".

Prices for wind and solar power fell past year to record lows in countries including India, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico and Chile, making the technologies increasingly comparable with or cheaper than energy from new gas or coal power stations.
