Volkswagen's Diesel Fix In US Costing $3B More Than Expected

Audi Electric Cars To Be Built Around The World

In Europe, regulators have allowed Volkswagen to address its diesel-emissions problems with software fixes for the 8.5 million vehicles affected.

Wolfgang Hatz, former research and development chief at Porsche and head of powertrain development at Audi and parent Volkswagen in previous roles, was taken into custody, the person said, marking the first arrest of a former board member of one of Volkswagen's units in Germany.

Volkswagen's diesel emissions cheating scandal continues to get more expensive as the automaker disclosed Friday it would take a $2.95 billion charge in the third quarter due to higher-than-expected vehicle buyback and retrofit costs.

The new charge is a result of a North American scheme to buy back and retro-fit diesel cars "proving to be far more technically complex and time consuming".

Earlier this year former Volkswagen Group engineer James Liang was sentenced to 40 months prison in the U.S. for his role in the emissions-dodging scandal, while former Volkswagen executive Oliver Schmidt will be sentenced in the United States on December 6.

One said refunds to those concerned about the anthem protests were only offered to subscribers with certain offers or plans. Trump said players who kneel or sit are "disrespecting the flag", called them "sons of b--" and said they should be fired.

The German group had previously set aside a total of 22.6 billion euros to cover costs such as fines and vehicle refits after cheating emissions tests. The latest charge raises the total US cost to VW to just under $30 billion. He has since been suspended from employment at VW Group.

Volkswagen AG will take a surprise charge of about $3 billion as plans to buy back or retrofit tainted USA diesel cars proves more complex than expected, bringing total damages from the two-year-old scandal to $30 billion. Last year, it agreed with US authorities to spend up to $15.3 billion to buy back or fix up to 475,000 2.0-litre polluting diesel cars.

The additional provisions will hit operating results in its third-quarter report, due October 27, the Wolfsburg, Germany-based company said Friday in a statement.

"We have to work more on the hardware", he said.

Three months ago, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved planned fixes to Volkswagen's 2-liter engine diesel cars from 2009 through 2014, including the Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Golf, Beetle, Beetle Convertible and Audi A3 models.
