"Any murder's horrific. It doesn't matter whether you're wearing a clown costume or not", said Palm Beach County Sheriff's Sgt. Richard McAfee.

Officers said in 1990, Sheila dressed as a clown, carrying balloons and flowers to Marlene Warren's door before shooting her point blank in the face.

It is believed the couple got married in Las Vegas in 2002 and began running a restaurant in Tennessee.

Detectives haven't said whether Michael Warren was involved in his former wife's death.

"We have two suspects, and they are Sheila Keen and Michael Warren", Lt. Steve Newell told media as far back as 1991, on the first anniversary of the death.

Sheila Keen Warren was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder in a 27-year-old killer clown cold case that returned its focus to a love triangle.

Warren was in a jail cell in Abingdon, Virginia, near the Tennessee state line on Wednesday morning, awaiting extradition to Florida.

The woman had been a suspect for the murder early on but there was never enough evidence to charge her. The balloons found at the scene were only sold at the Publix across from her home at the time.

"Oh, how pretty", her son remembered her saying.

'As she went to take the flowers and balloons, the clown shot her. He said he had noticed the clown's brown eyes.

The getaway vehicle, a white Chrysler LeBaron convertible, was also a key part of the initial investigation.

Marlene suffered a gunshot wound to the face and was taken to Palm West Hospital where she died two days later.

A white Chrysler convertible had been found abandoned on Royal Palm Beach, which matched Aherns' description, reports said at the time.

But no blood, fingerprints or a gun were ever recovered.

Sheila Keen Warren, now 54, was traced to Washington County, Virginia, more than 800 miles from the crime scene, and arrested on Tuesday. The salesperson described the woman who bought the items as having long, brown hair, like she had.

When the auto was eventually found abandoned after the killing, police discovered orange wig fibers inside of it, as well as long brown hairs similar to Keen's.

Employees at a costume store also tentatively identified Sheila as the woman who purchased clown paraphernalia two days before the murder.
