Top Hizbul militant killed in Uri encounter

Abdul Qayoom Najar

Top Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Abdul Qayoom Najar was killed in a gunbattle with security forces near the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector in Baramulla on Tuesday as he was trying to sneak into the valley to take charge of the outfit.

Najar, 39, who had been an active part of terror operations since 1999, was killed near Zorawar Post of Lachiproa in Uri. He congratulated the officer and soldiers who carried out the operations in which five militants were killed, including Najar, since Sunday in the area. The list was rejected by Hizbul Mujahideen leader Syed Salahuddin, which caused friction between the two commanders. Although Hizb had blamed the security agencies for these attacks, these killings were linked to Qayoom and his associate Imtiyaz Kundoo. Later that year, he had allegedly crossed over to Pakistan.

He was also involved in attacks on telecommunications towers across the valley in 2015.

Reports said that the authorities deployed large number of police, CRPF and army men in sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incident. Security forces got the first clues about his appearance, after he was caught on camera, outside a telecom operator's showroom, in Srinagar. For past few years, Nazar was amongst the most wanted militants in North Kashmir. The terrorist's family confirmed that he had been killed in the encounter.

In October 2014, Najar had compiled a hit-list of alleged informers working for security forces, which included two high-profile members of the separatist group led by Syed Ali Geelani.

The unprovoked and indiscriminate firing by Pakistan Army in Kashmir has effectively broken down the almost fifteen-year-old Ceasefire Agreement (CFA), the two countries agreed to in 2003.
