The problem for Sunday Night Football wasn't the national anthem protest, but that the game got out of hand relatively early, and was not competitive.

In metered market numbers, the primetime matchup that saw the Washington Redskins beat the Oakland Raiders 27-10 snared an 11.6/20, the worst SNF has performed this season so far.

The drop in ratings comes after amid a growing dispute between the NFL and President Donald Trump regarding players refusing to stand for the playing of the national anthem.

Sunday Night Football on NBC (Washington Redskins vs Oakland Raiders) took the biggest hit: viewership fell 11% from a year ago and it was the lowest-rated Sunday Night Football since 2006. CBS' "The NFL Today" had its traditional opening, "highlighting the CBS games of the week before an initial seven-minute discussion on Trump's comments".

Overall, ratings for Sunday's National Football League matches were down about 4 percent, according to John Ourand, a reporter at Sports Business Journal. And Fox Sports also saw ratings drop for afternoon games so far this year, falling 16% Sunday in comparison to the same time last year.

Crude Oil Firms Above $50
Ministers from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries , Russia and other producers meet on Friday. Brent for November settlement dropped 3 cents to $56.26/bbl on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange.

Donald Trump's war of words on the National Football League stoked higher interest in pregame discussion on Sunday of Week 3.

At some games Sunday, players kneeled in large numbers during the anthem and were critical of Trump's comments.

Overnight ratings can give a glimpse of which way viewership is going, but don't always tell the whole story.

You would think that this firestorm would have resulted in record ratings for Sunday Night Football, or at least a ratings boost.
