Anthony Weiner jailed for sexting girl

Anthony Weiner leaves federal court in New York after pleading guilty to a charge of sending sexual material to a minor

The former Democratic congressman from NY had faced up to 27 months in prison on Monday after his guilty plea to one charge of transferring obscene material to a minor. As part of that agreement, he agreed not to appeal any sentence between 21 and 27 months and will register as a sex offender.

One of the messages included a photo of his penis whilst he was near his four-year-old son, according to The Metro. During several of these chats Weiner "used graphic and obscene language" to ask the girl "to display her naked body and touch herself", prosecutors say".

His father and brother also joined him in the courtroom - but the serial sexter's soon-to-be-ex-wife Huma Abedin was nowhere to be seen, reports The New York Post. The charges stem from communications that the former congressman had with a 15-year-old girl on social media sites between January and March 2016.

Admitting "I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse", Weiner pleaded guilty in May to transferring obscene material to a minor, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, for illicit contact with a North Carolina teenager. He and Ms Abedin, who have a five-year-old child, are going through divorce proceedings.

"If I fail, I know what will happen", Weiner said.

But, he said, "these discrepancies were widespread ... the election did not meet the simple test ... we are unable to validate the result".

Weiner was born and raised in New York City.

"With Anthony, I have repeatedly found myself in circumstances I never imagined", she wrote. "And yet he compulsively responded to this teenage stranger too, under his own name as always, with his self-destructive behavior". "He responded as a weak man, at the bottom of a self-destructive spiral, and with an addict's self-serving delusion that the communications were all just Internet fantasy".

Though the government has not disputed that it was Weiner's underage victim who sought him out, curious to see if she could stoke Weiner's well-publicized proclivities, Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda Kramer bristled at the appearance of Weiner trying to "shift the blame".

Federal prosecutors argued that probation would be inadequate.

"Something more and different is required, beyond personal and professional consequences, beyond the collateral consequences that he has faced before, beyond the scrutiny of the public, all of which have failed to sufficiently deter him in the past", she said.
