CVS to follow federal guidelines for opioid prescriptions

"We see firsthand the impact of the alarming and rapidly growing epidemic of opioid addiction and misuse", said Larry J. Merlo, President and CEO, CVS Health.

With counseling on secure storage and disposal of opioid pills, the CVS pharmacists hope to limit easy access to the pills.

CVS pharmacy announced their new prescription plan will limit new patients to a seven-day supply.

CVS manages medications for almost 90M people, or ~28% of the USA population, through its Caremark unit and runs 9,700 retail pharmacies nationwide.

Another component of the new program announced by CVS is an expansion of safe disposal sites at its stores. They must determine if the prescribed opioid is appropriate, compare how the opioid may interact with other medications the patient is now taking, and occasionally advise the patient on taking a different medication.

This initiative expands the CVS Health Foundation's ongoing funding of programs to reduce prescription drug abuse. St., on the King's Daughters Medical Center campus in Ashland.

In an effort to fight the opioid epidemic, CVS is taking matters into its' own hands.
