Tesla may be working with AMD on AI chip for cars

According to a report issued by CNBC on Wednesday, Tesla is now testing samples of the first fabricated chips, built on top of intellectual property owned by AMD. For Tesla, this is the firs ttime they've opted for a objective built AI processor, which will be using both AMD and Tesla IP.

Tesla is looking to develop their own chips that are custom made to their AI needs, and provide energy efficiency while tackling specifically the problems of self-driving.

The chip project, according to CNBC, is being overseen by Autopilot head Jim Keller, an eight-year Apple veteran who had designed several chips for various iPhones.

Tesla is one of the leading automakers working towards a complete self-driving solution where it will one day be possible to hop in your auto, plug in a destination, and let the vehicle do all of the work. Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised this year that capability will be available to consumers in 2019.

Mobile Call Connect Charges Slashed By Nearly 60%. How It Affects You

As per the report, Tesla is now digging its hands into AMD, the semiconductor Company. In extending trade the shares of AMD were up to 2.2%. On the flip side, Nvidia shares are down 1.8 percent in the premarket. What is happening is that system companies like Google, like Amazon, like Tesla, like Microsoft, are coming directly to foundries.

Lipacis also comments on Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), which was bumped to the side in favor of AMD, saying that near-term headline risks aren't favorable but he doesn't see a long-term risk. In fact, the news until now Steves dismisses as "unsubstantiated" anyway; but even if true, whether AMD capture market share or not steal Nvidia's prime spot as "market leader". Based on 25 analysts polled by TipRanks in the last 3 months, 15 rate a Buy on Nvidia stock, 7 maintain a Hold, while 3 issue a Sell on the stock. "Overall, we think Nvidia remains as the primary workhorse/engine while AMD chips are used for specific applications to avoid giving Nvidia 100% of the AI content in self-driving vehicles", surmises the analyst.

Mosesmann maintained a buy rating on AMD and price target of 22.
