The US markets added further to close on new record highs after the Federal Reserve signaled it expects another interest rate hike by year-end and disclosed timing for reducing its balance sheet. HealthCare stocks witnessed hectic buying interest on weak rupee which dropped to over a two-month low against the United States dollar. But it settled at 10,147.55 - down 5.55 points, or 0.05 per cent.

The broader NSE index was down 0.44 percent at 10,096.65 as of 0608 GMT, while the benchmark BSE index was 0.36 percent lower at 32,284.01. It rose 17.75 points or 0.17% at the day's high of 10,158.90 in early trade.

It had declined 23.25 points in the previous two days.

The Fed left rates unchanged for now, as was widely anticipated, but investors' expectations changed for December after the U.S. central bank signaled one more rate hike by year-end despite recent weak inflation readings. However, a sharp recovery was seen.

ICICI Bank fell as much as 2.4 percent to its lowest since August 11, making it the top drag on both indexes. Japanese financial markets are closed for a public holiday today.

Dr Reddy's hit pay dirt, surging the most by 7.47 per cent to Rs 2,486.45 after the company said it has received Establishment Inspection Report (EIR) from the United States health regulator USFDA for its formulations manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh. Smaller rival Axis Bank fell 1.4%.

In terms of investments, provisional data with the exchanges showed that FIIs sold scrip worth Rs 1,185.44 crore while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased stocks worth Rs 946.23 crore.
