Mueller requests White House documents on key Trump-Russia moments

Rod Rosenstein

Mueller, who was hired to investigate Russia's interference in the 2016 election and any possible links or ties to the Trump campaign, is now clearly investigating President Trump's actions post-election.

According to the Times, Mr Mueller has also asked for information regarding how the White House responded to questions from the newspaper about a meeting Mr Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, had with a Kremlin-connected attorney previous year.

Regarding Comey, Mueller has asked for all documents related to meetings between Trump and Comey while Comey served at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, records of any discussions regarding Comey's firing and any documents related to a statement by then-press secretary Sean Spicer made on the night Comey was sacked.

The list of actions by the president and his close associates that Mueller's team has reportedly requested more information about suggest that investigators are looking at whether or not Trump sought to shut down the investigation into Flynn.

Additionally, the Mueller probe is seeking documents related to the White House's reaction to the revelation of the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting, where top Trump campaign aides and family members met with Russia-linked figures.

Well, Trump may come to regret that meeting. But the obstruction of justice and the lying ultimately may be what puts an end to this White House. Mueller has asked for all documents the White House has about the meeting, and all internal White House communications about the statement drafted on Air Force One.

Two bills that could curb the power of President Donald Trump's administration to fire special counsel Robert Mueller are set for a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

"The White House doesn't comment on any communications between the White House and the Office of Special Counsel out of respect for the Office of Special Counsel and its process", Cobb said. It is not clear whether Mueller has made separate document requests elsewhere to examine those subjects.

So it makes ideal sense that Mueller wants to know as much he can about precisely why Flynn was sacked, and what discussions of the matter might have taken place among White House officials beforehand. Yates has said that before her firing, she had raised concerns with McGahn that Flynn was misleading White House officials on his contact with foreign figures.

US officials said Flynn had told the vice president that he had only exchanged holiday greetings with Kislyak, when in fact the two men had discussed economic sanctions against Russian Federation. It is both specific to his time on the campaign - and does not, presumably, cover the transitional period between the election and inauguration - and also does not categorically deny collusion may have taken place, it just asserts he was not aware of it.

Schmidt only mentions three of those 13, but those three are revealing - and indicate that Mueller's interest in the obstruction angle is very serious indeed. The special counsel wants any White House documents about the decision-making that led to Comey's firing, and about all meetings Comey had with Trump.
