USA stocks open higher ahead of Fed meeting

Global shares mixed but Nikkei rises on yen muted elsewhere- Japan Financial Markets

Earlier in the day the Dow inched higher to a fresh record high of 22,386.01. In Part 1, we discussed the performance of the S&P 500 Index (SPY) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DIA).

The fact that US stocks closed at records on Friday "suggests that as long as the situation does not escalate into military conflict, market participants may continue to place less and less emphasis on North Korean developments", said Charalambos Pissouros, senior analyst at IronFX, in a note to clients on Monday.

Trading activity may be somewhat subdued, however, as traders may be reluctant to make significant moves ahead of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy announcement on Wednesday.

While the Fed is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged, traders are likely to pay close attention to the accompanying statement for clues about the outlook for policy.

On the USA economic front, the Commerce Department released a report showing an unexpected decrease in new residential construction in the month of August.

The report said housing starts fell by 0.8% to an annual rate of 1.180 million in August from a revised 1.190 million in July.

The import-price index (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/cost-of-imported-goods-surge-in-august-led-by-fuel-2017-09-19) jumped 0.6% last month to match the biggest increase since January, largely due to higher oil prices.

The Labor Department said import prices climbed by 0.6% in August after edging down by 0.1% in July. Economists had expected import prices to rise by 0.4 percent. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares rose 0.4 percent to 7,278.

Financial stocks have also moved to the upside on the day, while weakness visible among biotechnology and healthcare stocks.
