U2 cancel U.S. show due to safety concerns

The Latest: Protesters expected to reconvene for 3rd day

Concerts by U2 and Ed Sheeran scheduled for this weekend in St. Louis were among many events canceled amid demonstrations following the acquittal Friday of former St. Louis police officer Jason Stokely. New rallies are expected to take place in the city Saturday and Sunday, explaining the decision of the police.

Irish rockers U2 canceled their Saturday show in St. Louis because local cops said they couldn't provide the usual level of security in the wake of protests.

The 26-year-old Thinking Out Loud singer was due to play a sold out concert in the city's Scottrade Centre, but as the protests in the city turned violent, show planners cancelled the gig.

Police were out in force but did not tussle with protesters, unlike the previous night, when nine city officers, a county officer and a state trooper were injured and at least 33 people were taken into custody, said St. Louis Police Chief Lawrence O'Toole.

On Saturday, U2 said of the decision to cancel their Saturday night show, "We can not in good conscience risk our fans' safety by proceeding with tonight's concert".

Terror probe after knife attacker targets soldier in Paris
France declared a state of emergency following attacks in Paris in November 2015, in which more than 130 people were killed. In January 2015, Islamist gunmen had stormed into the offices of satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo , killing 12 journalists.

Briton Sheeran announced he was pulling the plug on his show, set for a different St Louis venue on Sunday, amid the protests. "As much as we regret having to cancel, we feel it is the only acceptable course of action in the current environment", they added.

Police were prepared for a second night of protests after Friday's demonstrations led to several clashes - including rocks thrown at a police vehicle and objects tossed at officers in riot gear - and culminated when protesters broke a window and spattered red paint on the home of Mayor Lyda Krewson.

Stockley insisted he saw Smith holding a gun and felt he was in imminent danger.

The case has drawn a lot of attention in St Louis, where racial tensions have been high since the 2014 killing of a black man in the city's suburb of Ferguson by a white police officer.

Prosecutors brought first degree murder charges in 2016, alleging that Stockley's comments to his partner showed premeditation and alleging he planted a gun in Smith's vehicle after the shooting.
