Jury accepts Anissa Weier's insanity plea in 'Slender Man' stabbing

MONDAY FEB. 20 2017 FILE POOL

A jury has found that a Wisconsin girl who admitted to participating in the 2014 stabbing of a classmate to please horror character Slender Man was mentally ill during the attack.

All three girls were 12 at the time when Geyser stabbed the victim 19 times before she and Weier left her to die as part of a plot to become proxies of the fictional Internet character Slender Man.

The ruling means Weier will go to a mental hospital instead of prison.

Geyser has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease to being a party to first-degree attempted intentional homicide. Geyser, who is accused of doing the stabbing, pleaded not guilty, and her trial is scheduled to begin October 9.

A psychologist has testified that a 12-year-old girl suffered from a shared delusion with a friend that led to the stabbing of another girl in a Wisconsin park in 2014.

Judge orders Anissa Weier committed to a mental health institution. Jurors will determine whether she was mentally ill when she helped stab Payton Leutner.

"I know her family is relieved".

'I'm very thankful to the jurors for taking the time to look at what was really going on with her, ' Weier's attorney Maura McMahon said. A passing bicyclist found Leutner. Westendorf was appointed by a judge to evaluate Weier, now 15, after her plea.

Sen. Scott talks race relations with the president
The White House has not yet released an official comment on whether the president will sign or veto this new measure. Scott has been outspoken on issues of racism but supportive of the president's low-tax economic agenda.

The Slender Man is a fictional supernatural character.

Defence attorney Joseph Smith Jr yesterday told Waukesha County Court: "Anissa's broken mind caused her to lose touch with reality".

"First of all, she was 12", Westendorf said, adding that the teen was influenced by a website focused on imaginary killers. Leutner told Fisher her mother tried to assure her it was all fiction, but she also told the detective that she still was uncertain and wanted to believe Geyser even after she stabbed her, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

After deliberating for the day on Friday the jury determined that Weier was mentally ill at the time of the attack.

Geyser's trial is due to start next month.

Weier told investigators she and co-defendant Morgan Geyser believed they had to sacrifice Payton Leutner to protect themselves and their families from Slender Man. Prosecutors argued she knew what she was doing was wrong.

Jurors saw clips of Weier's police interrogation, during which Weier appeared to move from belief in Slender Man to doubt to a realization that he wasn't real.

Weier, now 15, pleaded guilty in August to being a party to attempted second-degree intentional homicide.
