Sampha beats Ed Sheeran to Mercury Prize

Kate Tempest covers Bob Dylan in thrilling Strombo session

The South London-based singer, songwriter and producer who has collaborated with Drake and Kanye West said "I feel like I'm dreaming!" as he accepted the award.

SAMPHA last night won the Hyundai Mercury Prize for best album of the year for Process.

The Awards Show was hosted by BBC Music's Lauren Laverne and guest presenter, Idris Elba announced the overall victor.

'Thank you to the judges who thought my album was good enough!'

The musician born in London to Sierra Leonean parents dedicated the prize to his family.

Patty Jenkins will direct 'Wonder Woman 2'
Now, Jenkins will return to direct and co-write, and has reportedly already begun work on the script with Geoff Johns . Early reviews praised the film's hope and optimism, along with a honest portrayal of the titular character.

The judging panel said: "Sampha's Process is a beautifully intimate record. When you discover this record you'll want to live with it, share it and celebrate it".

While he didn't take home the Mercury Prize, Stormzy made his presence known that evening through a jaw-dropping performance of his hit single "First Things First". Sheeran, who was a surprising nominee this year, couldn't attend the event.

Last year, Skepta won the prestigious award with his album Konnichiwa - the first grime artist to win since Dizzee Rascal in 2003 with Boy In Da Corner.

He included a shout-out to Stormzy's album and the Common Sense, the short-listed album by J Hus. Ed Sheeran's hit album ÷ (Divide) was on the shortlist for the honour, as was alt-j's Relaxer, Blossoms by Blossoms, Kate Tempest's Let Them Eat Chaos, and Gang Signs & Prayer by rapper Stormzy. "They'd be super happy for me".
