Kuala Lumpur school fire kills at least 23, mostly students, officials say

Teenagers set fire to school and killed 21 children 'after being called names'

For the time being, police have classified the case of 23 people killed in a pre-dawn blaze yesterday at Tahfiz Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah in Jalan Datuk Keramat, Kuala Lumpur as "sudden death".

23 students and two school staff died in the fire.

Fire officials said they found no damage to the electrical wiring of the dormitory, ruling out their earlier suggestion that a short circuit probably caused the blaze. The fire broke out at a boarding school in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The department's director-general Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim said initial submissions of architectural drawings showed that the building had two stairwells and was an open concept dormitory which would allow those inside access to both stairwells for emergency exit.

INVESTIGATIONS into Thursday's tahfiz school fire may veer towards the possibility of foul play.

Some offer a curriculum similar to secular schools, but with a greater emphasis on Islamic knowledge, while others provide more specialised education.

Twenty-one of those killed were boys aged between 13 and 17 and the other two victims were teachers, Singh said.

Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 Demo Due Out Tomorrow
Four stadiums are also available- Santiago Bernabéu, La Bombonera, StubHub Center, and King Fahd Stadium. The demo version that will be released later today will feature 12 clubs and 4 stadiums to choose from.

According to reports, people in the area who had woken for morning prayers heard cries for help and saw flames engulfing the top floor of the building, where children were sleeping in dorms.

The director of police of Kuala Lumpur, Amar Singh, said that "the bodies were burned".

"They have a right to be safe from accidents and potential dangers", he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told reporters that it isn't the first such incident, adding that all Islamic religious schools were required to register and follow safety requirements. "We are now investigating the cause of the fire".

It is reported that the fire started right outside a room on the second floor, trapping scores of students and teachers inside the room.

There are 519 tahfiz schools - where children are sent to memorize the Koran - registered in Malaysia, however many more are believed to be unregistered, the Star Online reported. More than 200 fires are said to have been recorded nationwide at private religious schools since 2015.
