Google appeals against EU's €2.4bn fine over search engine results

It gave the company 90 days to comply or face further fines. But Google's "fix" - which turned search placements into a pay-to-play auction - appalled critics.

The regulator issued the fine as they said Google abused their power as they had placed their own shopping comparison service at the top of the Google results page.

Last week, EU officials said a plan that Google recently filed to comply with European regulations appeared to be a step "in the right direction".

Brussels accused Google of giving its own service too much priority in search results at the expense of other price comparison services, such as TripAdvisor and Expedia.

He says, "Boy, it's so much harder than I thought it would be". By sunrise, though, the public still hadn't heard from her. This is really tough. "I had no idea". "It's real.

However, setting up a court battle between Brussels and the internet giant could take years to resolve and make already tense relations between Europe and the U.S. tech giant even more fraught, AFP reported.

At the time of the ruling, Europe's antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager said Google's strategy for attracting customers to its online shopping service was not just about being better than rivals.

While Google has appealed the decision, it has not requested that the court suspend it in the meantime, and it appears as though the company will continue to work towards fulfilling the changes ordered by the June ruling. "And most importantly, it denied European consumers a genuine choice of services and the full benefits of innovation".

The Google case is different, but the judgment has been welcomed by companies under European Union scrutiny because it raises the bar for the regulator to prove wrongdoing. Last week, the EU's highest court backed Intel Corp.'s appeal of a €1.06 billion antitrust fine from 2009, seen as dealing a blow to the antitrust regulator.
