Mexican Quake Death Toll Rises to 58

Death toll rises to 33 in Mexico earthquake

One of the most powerful earthquakes to ever hit Mexico killed at least 32 people late Thursday night and crippled hundreds of buildings.

A tsunami was confirmed in Mexico with one wave coming in at three feet, according to the National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The death toll from the powerful 8.1 magnitude natural disaster that jolted the southern coast of Mexico late Thursday, rose to 61 with relief operations still underway.

President Enrique Peña Nieto said this quake was the strongest the country has seen in almost a century. The quake's epicenter was 600 miles southeast of Mexico City in the Pacific Ocean, and the shaking was felt as far away as Guatemala City. Because of the location of the quake, tsunami waves also crashed onto the Southern Mexican coast.

French police find bomb-making materials at Paris-area apartment
It is reported two of the suspects are French nationals of North African origin who were not previously known to police. Collomb says police found substances that "may be used to make explosives" in the unit.

At least 61 people have died in Mexico after the country was struck by its most powerful quake in a century.

Different parts of the world are reporting feeling the effects of the quake, in places like Mexico City; Austin, Texas, and Washington state. Earlier, the governor of Tabasco, Arturo Nunez, said two children had died in his state. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the magnitude at 8.1, but other institutions rated it between 8.2 and 8.4.

Mr Pena Nieto said a million people had initially been left without power, but 800,000 had now had it restored. Chiapas Gov. Manuel Velasco said roofs across the country had collapsed, and homes, schools, and hospitals were affected by the quake. Pemex said there were no reports of damage to its Salina Cruz refinery in Oaxaca, the largest in Mexico. Residents of the Mexican capital fled into the streets, many in their pajamas, for fear buildings would collapse.

"Tsunami waves reaching more than three meters above the tide level are possible along the coasts of Mexico", it said, with lower waves in other countries.
