Trump's deal with Democrats makes Republicans shudder

Democratic leaders made their announcement Wednesday morning, saying in a statement they would support a debt ceiling bill being tied to Harvey aid, but only if the measure to avoid default lasted for three months.

"I mean he undermined the ability to get a much better deal all around and I don't even think he realized that he did it", the GOP lawmaker told CNN.

"The president agreed with Senator Schumer and Congresswoman Pelosi".

"In the meeting, the President and Congressional leadership agreed to pass aid for Harvey, an extension of the debt limit, and a continuing resolution both to December 15, all together", Schumer said in a joint statement with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi and Schumer had advocated for a short-term rise in the debt ceiling, a move that would allow the USA government to continue to borrow money.

According to Politico, McConnell who had originally advocated for an 18-month hike in the debt ceiling were forced on the defensive, retreating to advocating for six months.

Those include Harvey disaster relief, raising the debt ceiling by early October to prevent an unprecedented default on USA government debt, and passing legislation for federal spending in the fiscal year that begins on Oct. 1 to avoid a government shutdown. Democrats insisted on a three-month increase, only to be joined by Trump.

On average, one person is killed every 51 minutes in an impaired driving crash. The crackdown runs through Monday, September 4.

Both aides requested anonymity to speak freely on the private discussion.

Conservatives who oppose a debt-ceiling increase without spending concessions will celebrate that they get another crack at this in December, but the joke's on them.

Just hours before Trump and top congressional Democrats agreed on the deal at a White House meeting that included Republican leaders, House Speaker Paul Ryan had called the idea of tying storm aid to the debt limit as "ridiculous and disgraceful". "It is absolutely absurd". For cripes sake, the only reason Schumer and Pelosi want a short-term extension is because they know this issue gives Republicans fits and is likely to spark another round of infighting in December.

"Helping to clear the decks in September enables us to focus on tax reform for the American people", Marc Short, Trump's director of legislative affairs, told reporters.

During the Obama administration, Congress failed to pass the DREAM Act, which would have provided protections to immigrants who came here illegally as children. If not, the government would be unable to borrow more money or pay its bills, including its debt payments.

Democrats have also sought legislation to stabilize the health insurance markets, which have been mired by uncertainty over the future of the Affordable Care Act With Republicans failing thus far in their attempts to repeal and replace the healthcare law, Democrats could make their support for raising the debt ceiling contingent upon funding to stabilize the health insurance marketplace established by the ACA. Economists have said the effects of a debt limit breach would be catastrophic, with some suggesting a collapse worse than the financial crisis of 2007-08. More relief funding also could be added as Hurricane Irma bears down on south Florida.
