Huawei unveils mobile AI computing platform

Huawei's Kirin 970 is official: high-power, AI-enabled mobile SoC

The company has very recently announced their recent all new Kirin 970 processor at the IFA a few days back and the latest flagship will be powered by this processor only. The company's vision for the future of mobile AI computing is a combination of cloud computing with the speed of native AI processing in the Kirin 970.

"Compared with Samsung and Apple, we have advantages", Huawei CEO Richard Yu said at IFA. "Mobile AI = On-Device AI + Cloud AI". This includes processing all the real-time, personalized data that's generated by a phone's sensors, and in turn fulfilling Huawei's goal of providing a personalized experience.

The Kirin 970, which will power forthcoming handsets, features an eight-core CPU and a 12-core GPU.

The chipsets consist of 5.5 billion transistors on a single square centimetre area. Chief Executive of Huawei, Richard Yu revealed an upcoming new chip for their smartphones that, the company claims, will outrun the processors used in Apple's and Samsung's now used phones across the globe.

Huawei's new heterogeneous computing architecture is mentioned to deliver up to 25x the performance with 50x greater efficiency.

The chipset means that instead of relying on AI in the cloud, the smartphone will have its own sensing abilities within the device.
