Kenya's Supreme Court quashes presidential election result

Immediately after the Supreme Court nullified the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta, opposition leader Raila Odinga said it was a historic day for Kenya and Africa.

Kenya's incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta has called for judicial reforms in the country after the Supreme Court annulled his victory in the August election.

Kenya's election commission had declared Kenyatta the victor of last month's election by a margin of 1.4 million votes but the result was immediately challenged in court by his closest challenger, Raila Odinga.

Kenyatta's comments are coming days after his opponent Raila Odinga called for the resignation and prosecution of some election commission officials. Justice Maraga, cited "irregularities in the transmission of results" as the primary reasoning for the court's decision to declare it "invalid, null and void".

Immediately after the ruling, opposition supporters took to the streets in Nairobi and other towns where Mr. Odinga enjoys the bulk of support to celebrate the victory.

The election sparked days of sporadic protests, in which at least 28 people were killed.

There are fears that the disputed election could bring a recurrence of the violence seen after the 2007 election, ABC reported. Mr. Odinga, 72, brought the case before the Kenyan Supreme Court.

It is the first time in Kenya's history a presidential election result has been cancelled. We clearly have a problem ... However, President Kenyatta hit out at the judges, saying "six people have decided they will go against the will of the people". However, a new election date has yet to be determined by the country's election commission.

Kenya's electoral commission said it would change personnel and processes to prepare for a new presidential vote.

Speaking at a rally in Nairobi attended by thousands of his supporters, he said: "We have said that you can not force Kenyans to go to the polls that (are) being supervised by thieves".

On Friday, the court invalidated the exercise after the opposition sought legal recourse, claiming vote rigging. Odinga has contested the last three polls and lost each time.

No supreme court has ever judged against a sitting president, and this decision sets precedent, making it a first in Kenya and the entire African continent. Details of the ruling will be released within 21 days.

He had claimed the electronic voting results were hacked and rigged in favour of Kenyatta. If it turns out that the computerised vote tallying was seriously manipulated, the opposition will get a boost.
