Tens of thousands evacuated from Frankfurt for war bomb detonation

German authorities prepare to dispose of WW2 bomb

The evacuation is set to last two hours, the police said.

Police used a helicopter equipped with thermal imaging equipment to check that each street had been cleared in the potential blast zone should defusing the bomb go wrong.

German explosives experts started to defuse a massive World War Two bomb in Frankfurt today after tens of thousands of people evacuated their homes.

For safety, a 0.57 square mile area of the Westend district of the city is being cleared, with authorities warning that the bomb could destroy an entire city block if it should accidentally explode.

In the largest evacuation of its kind in Germany since the end of #World War Ii, nearly 60,000 residents in the German city of #Frankfurt have been evacuated while bomb experts work on disposing of a 4,000 lb British "blockbuster" bomb, discovered on a local construction site in the city center.

There are believed to be hundreds of thousands of unexploded wartime bombs across Germany.

Those affected have been offered free entry to several of the city's museums, while shelters have also been opened for residents.

Seven decades after the end of the Second World War, unexploded bombs from intense Allied raids on Nazi Germany are still occasionally found in building sites, forests and fields and sometimes even in private gardens.

The Sunday evacuation is the largest seen in Germany since the war. The rate of fatalities has slowed since, with 11 technicians said to have been killed in Germany since 2000. Similar operations are still common 72 years after the war ended. But with experts estimating that some 350-400 bombs remain buried, the task is far from complete.
