Hurricane Harvey's homeless pets being sent across United States for new homes

Pet Relief Efforts Continue After Hurricane Harvey

Saturday's move included animals from shelters in Terrebonne Parish, Jefferson Parish, Plaquemines Parish, St. Bernard Parish and the Companion Animal Alliance, the SPCA said.

The devastating aftermath of Hurricane Harvey has left hundreds of Houston-area pets homeless and in need of shelter - and some are being sent across the country to get new owners.

Animal Friends says that in order to admit as many animals from Texas as they can, the dogs now up for adoption need to be taken in by loving families so that they can empty their full kennels. They are providing rescue rigs, rescue staff, and trained first responder volunteers.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is also working hard to help those impacted by the storm.

With a disaster of this scope, it's inspiring to see all of the people and organizations working tirelessly to rescue pets and even wildlife.

The effort, spearheaded by the Austin group, includes Central Texas veterinarians who made made the trip to the Houston suburb to help. They too are taking in pet supplies and food as well as accepting monetary donations to assist with the pets in need in Texas. PFI is helping to identify additional alternatives as current hub, Rescue Bank is now inaccessible.

A number of dogs that were waiting to be adopted in Texas shelters are coming to Pittsburgh, giving those shelters room to take in animals displaced by Hurricane Harvey. They have several initiatives underway to help pets displaced by Harvey. Phillips Pet Food and Supplies will also be donating Dream Crates wire crates to help in the safe transportation of rescues.

VCA Animal Hospitals is providing an updated list of area hospitals that are open and offering free boarding and medication assistance as many area locations have been evacuated.

Adoptable animals admitted into the SPCA shelter prior to Harvey are being shipped to Atlanta, where they will hopefully find their fur-ever homes.

World Pet Association is coordinating efforts with their members including manufacturers, retailers and distributors across the country in order to organize efforts and support immediate and ongoing needs in Texas.
