In 'Spirit Of Parity,' US Orders Russia To Close Consulate, 2 Annexes

Russia is accusing the US of gross violations of global law in its order to Moscow to close the Russian consulate in San Francisco by Saturday.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed regret over the "escalation of tensions" after the US State Department ordered Russia to close several diplomatic offices in the US within 48 hours, RT reports.

The United States says it may resume conducting limited interviews at its three Russian Federation consulates for people seeking USA visas.

Not much activity was detected outside the consulate building at 2790 Green Street in San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

Last year, the consulate issued more than 16,000 visas to U.S. citizens.

The United States demanded that Russian Federation shut down its Consulate General in San Francisco and two other diplomatic entities in New York City and Washington, DC by September 2, the US Department of State said in a press release on Thursday, Sputnik reports. With the latest closure orders from Washginton, "both countries will remain with three consulates each", she said. When Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the USA diplomats were being expelled, Trump responded by saying, "I want to thank him because we're trying to cut down the payroll".

Finally, on July 28th, Russia responded to the provocation by expelling as many as 755 diplomats from the country with a deadline for leaving 1st September and brought down the numbers of U.S. diplomatic staffs working in Russia in line with the Russians working in the United States.

"We are talking about invasion into a consulate and the accommodation of diplomatic staff, what's more they are being chucked out so that they don't get in the way of the Federal Bureau of Investigation agents", Zakharova said.

"It is an important and needed response, but it is not proportionate", said Michael McFaul, who served as ambassador to Moscow during President Barack Obama's administration.

"We are open even now for constructive cooperation where it corresponds to Russian interests", Lavrov said Friday.

"We still believe Russia's decision to limit the size of our mission was unwarranted and detrimental, but we have implemented the decision", a senior administration official told reporters during a conference call on Thursday.

"I want to thank him because we're trying to cut down our payroll and as far as I'm concerned", Trump told reporters in his first public comments about the cuts.

"As Lenin said, hysterical impulses are of no use to us".

Russian President Vladimir Putin denied interfering in the election and strongly protested Obama's move.
