Toddlers among dead as India hit by monsoon flooding

As Storm Harvey dominates headlines floods are devastating South Asia

Millions more have been affected, as rescue workers struggle to deliver aid. At least 1000 have been displaced due to the flood situation in South Asia.

India's monsoon season runs from June to September.

Many recalled the 2005 floods in and around the city, which killed more than 500 people.

This week media across the world has focused its cameras on devastating floods in Texas while natural disasters in Bangladesh, India and Nepal have gone unreported.

Anirudh Kumar, a disaster management official in Patna, the capital of Bihar, a poor state known for its mass migration from rural areas to cities, said this year's farming had collapsed because of the floods, which will lead to a further rise in unemployment in the region. In Uttar Pradesh, 2.5 million have been affected and 109 have died.

On Tuesday, Mumbai was flooded as the entire city came to a standstill.

"Flights were delayed by around 20 minutes", added Veena Chiplunkar, a spokeswoman for the Mumbai International Airport.

Some roads have been hit by waist-deep flooding. Many of those homes have been destroyed and people are living under tarps as disease spreads.

Army troops have been helping to evacuate people marooned on rooftops or trees, while air force helicopters dropped packets of food, drinking water and medicines to those camping on higher ground, mostly along highways.

Nearly a third of Bangladesh's terrain has been submerged by floods.

Marek says the Red Cross in Bangladesh has requested about $4.9 million from the global community to continue their immediate relief efforts.
