Sharjeel Khan banned for five years in PSL spot-fixing case

Pakistan cricketer Sharjeel Khan banned for five years

The allegation relates to a match played between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi held in February, in which Sharjeel scored a single off four deliveries including two dots (balls which result in no runs).

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) tribunal handed down the punishment following a hearing on Wednesday, but two and a half years of the ban is suspended.

His lawyer Shaighan Ejaz told a media conference hours after the tribunal released its short order announcing the ban that Sharjeel would mull over appealing against the decision. "Given the proceedings of the case, we were expecting a different decision", he said.

"We investigated all the charges and found them correct", said Asghat Haider, who headed the three-member tribunal.

The panel also former PCB Chairman Lt Gen (R) Tauqir Zia and ex-Test cricketer Wasim Bari.

Hurricane Harvey: Explosion risk at chemical plant forces evacuations
Employees at the plant have been evacuated and families were being evacuated into early Wednesday morning. If that class of chemical gets too hot, it can cause fires or explosions.

On the other hand, PCB legal advisor, Mr Taffazul Rizvi expressed that Sharjeel was a competent player and PCB imposed a minimum possible ban on him. Apart from Sharjeel, Khalid Latif had also been suspended and sent back from the PSL tournament. As we understand, those three serious charges have not been proven.

Earlier, former Pakistan Test captain Salim Malik was given a life ban for match-fixing by the Justice Malik Qayyum inquiry commission in 2000 but a lower court later overturned the ban.

The PCB had even asked the tribunal for a life ban on the two players.

All-rounder Mohammad Nawaz and seamer Mohammad Irfan have already been sanctioned as part of the inquiry after they failed to report suspicious approaches. Irfan was banned for one year with six months suspended and fined one million rupees ($9,500).

Sharjeel Khan was banned for one year.
