Muslims Prepare for Hajj Pilgrimage

In the conservative kingdom that’s a big shift

Saudi authorities have reportedly hired 51,700 Saudi and expat employees in Mina to serve the pilgrims during their stay at the tent city.

Dr Yaacob, who is also Minister for Communications and Information, is leading the Singapore delegation, as a gesture of the Singapore Government's appreciation to Saudi Arabia for Singapore's revised haj quota, and as commemoration of 40 years of bilateral ties.

Saudi Arabian authorities have started welcoming Hajj pilgrims who have travelled from across the world to undertake the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was personally overseeing the arrangements.

It is a sharp contrast to past year when some 12,000 Qataris took part in the annual event, one of the five pillars of Islam.

For almost three months, the Gulf has been embroiled in its worst ever political crisis, with Saudi Arabia and its allies facing off against Qatar, which they accuse of being too close to Iran and backing extremism.

Spokesperson of Saudi Interior Ministry, Mansour Turki said the security services had dismantled a number of militant cells in Mecca and Medina over the past few years.

Gerd Nonneman, a professor of International Relations and Gulf Studies at Georgetown University in Qatar, says the Saudi move was "a transparent propaganda stunt". This, he said, is germane to the successful implementation of the 2017 hajj operations.

While the hajj is a main pillar of Islam, the custodianship of its holy sites is a pillar of the Al Saud family's legitimacy and power.

The statement said that so far, more than 2,100 free medical procedures had been performed on the pilgrims.

This year sees pilgrims from Iran return after a hiatus following a diplomatic spat between the Islamic republic and Sunni arch-rival Saudi Arabia.

The hajj is required of all Muslims once in a lifetime. The incident prompted Iran to ban its citizens from making the pilgrimage to Mecca past year. Approximately 15,000 police have been deployed to ensure security during the pilgrimage.

Iranians, however, will be allowed to participate in this year's event.
