NJ Won't Hold Sandy Votes Against Texas, Christie Says

WASHINGTON-Hurricane Harvey leaves Congress with a pair of unexpected financial challenges: further shoring up a heavily indebted federal flood insurance program and providing emergency funding for uncovered damage.

Citing high waters still on the roads near his house, Cruz's office did not confirm his attendance for meetings Tuesday until that very morning. "Many of them, just like those in Houston, lost absolutely everything they owned".

But the storm, which on Tuesday was tilting toward neighboring Louisiana, has the potential to be one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history, and lawmakers have already broached the subject of recovery funding.

"It's critical that we provide emergency relief for families affected by this storm so they can begin to rebuild their lives and their communities", said MacArthur. However, even the Post slyly admits that much of the Sandy relief bill was not direct relief funding and would be strung out over a long period of time - and even that some of the funding was completely unrelated to Sandy.

"The devastation of Hurricane Harvey has two-faced Texas politicians looking for the same sort of relief funding they flatly opposed five years ago", noted Larry McShane of the New York Daily News."Cornyn and Cruz were among the 39 Republican senators to oppose the [Hurricane Sandy aid] package, along with 179 GOP members of the House".

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was particularly appreciative of the help and announced that NJ Task Force 1, comprised of police, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel - are in Katy, Texas, a suburb approximately 30 miles (48.3 km) west of Houston.

Their votes are suddenly back in the spotlight, as lawmakers still on their summer recess sniped across social media. And it helps explain why in early 2013 virtually every Republican in the Texas congressional delegation voted against the $51-billion emergency aid package after Hurricane Sandy devastated NY and New Jersey.

A New Jersey Democrat offered similar thoughts.

Trump says 'massive' cheering crowd proves he was right to pardon Arpaio
The people went insane when I said, "What do you think of Sheriff Joe?" or something to that effect. Trump praised Arpaio in a White House press conference Monday where he defended his pardon .

"I didn't think it was appropriate to engage in pork-barrel spending where two-thirds of that bill was unrelated spending that had nothing to do with Sandy", Mr. Cruz said.

AshLee Strong, a spokeswoman for House Speaker Paul Ryan (R., Wis.), said Congress "will help those affected by this bad disaster", adding that the first step is a formal request for resources from the Trump administration.

Officials say there's no way to estimate the damage totals yet. Harvey has also dumped torrential rain over southeast Texas, with ABC News meteorologists forecasting historic rainfall totals up to 50 inches by Wednesday.

"To my colleagues who are from states that have had disasters, some recently, who have decided we need to change the rules of the game - shame on you", he said.

Zeldin added, "Regardless of whether you're a fellow New Yorker or a Texan, we want to be as helpful as possible".

Trump said in a speech in Arizona last week that if Congress doesn't include money for the wall, he'll shut down the government.

And amid all these these potentially contentious budget conversations is Trump's push for a wall between the US and Mexico.
