MEXICO: Country Responds To Trump's Statements On NAFTA And Border Wall

Hundreds of people march along a levee toward the Rio Grande to oppose the wall the U.S. government wants to build on the river separating Texas and Mexico Saturday Aug. 12 2017 in Mission Texas

The Mexican government has once again made it abundantly clear it will not pay for a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border, despite President Donald Trump's claims to the contrary.

He also raised anew his threat to withdraw from Nafta, saying the US will "probably at least have to start the termination process" in order to meet his goals for renegotiating the trade deal.

The US, Mexico and Canada have begun formal negotiations to rework the 23-year-old trade deal that Trump blames for hundreds of thousands of lost US factory jobs.

"As the government of Mexico has always maintained, our country will not pay, under any circumstances, a wall or physical barrier built on USA territory along the Mexican border", the statement said.

And of course, he repeatedly reiterated that Mexico would pay for the wall, even if had to be through "reimbursement" - a nice big word to stand in for "American taxpayers will fund the wall because Mexico is never going to do it, no matter how loudly I yell".

As for violence in Mexico, the Mexican government cited the "high demand" for drugs in the U.S.as key to the ongoing drug-related turmoil south of the border.

NAFTA has been "incredibly successful" for the United States, Canada and Mexico and particularly beneficial for Nebraska, Gov. Pete Ricketts said Friday as he expressed optimism that the trade agreement will be improved rather than ended. As you know, Mexico has a tremendous crime problem - tremendous - one of the number two or three in the world.

Asked about Mexico paying for the wall, Bossert said the initial effort is on getting an appropriation to build the barrier.

Trump says 'massive' cheering crowd proves he was right to pardon Arpaio
The people went insane when I said, "What do you think of Sheriff Joe?" or something to that effect. Trump praised Arpaio in a White House press conference Monday where he defended his pardon .

Trump is also taking to Twitter to press the need for his promised southern border wall. We must have the wall.

The response to President Trump's tweet is nearly universally negative.

"Chrystia Freeland, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs "...it's probably worth pointing out today that our trade with the U.S.is balanced and mutually beneficial".

"We think Congress will feel very much the way I feel and in very much a bipartisan way", Trump said.

He also tweeted that Mexico will pay for it 'through reimbursement/other'.

Congressional funding for the border wall is not well taken by Democrats and a section among Republicans.

With Mexico refusing to pay, Trump has said since taking office in January that the wall will initially need United States funding but that he will find a way to make Mexico ultimately pay for it.

"We will continue to work to encourage the administration to open up access for our markets", Ricketts said.
