Coffee Consumption Is Associated With Lower Risk Of Death

It is possible that the anti-inflammatory polyphenols in coffee could play a role in its protective effect

The new study suggests that it could reduce the chance of early death from all causes - by as much as two thirds. The participants were 37 years old, on average, at the start of the study and were followed for approximately 10 years.

The more coffee you drink, the lower your risk of death, according to research presented at the ESC Congress, reports Comunicaffe. And those drinking four cups had a 64 per cent relative drop in death risk, compared with those who never or rarely consumed coffee, meaning they had an absolute death risk of well under 1 per cent.

These results are similar to those found in two major studies released in July, which focused on participants in certain parts of Europe and the United States.

"Our findings suggest that drinking four cups of coffee each day can be part of a healthy diet in healthy people", said researcher Dr. Adela Navarro, a cardiologist at Hospital de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain.

The link between coffee consumption and a decreased risk of mortality was not as prevalent in younger participants, but those who were at least 45 years old and drank two additional cups of coffee per day had a 30% lower risk of mortality.

Four cups of joe a day will keep the doctor away, or so a recent study says. "This may be due to a stronger protective association among older participants", Navarro said.

Killer Nurse May Have Killed 84 Others With Drugs Causing Heart Failure
Police said Monday that investigators exhuming and analyzing more bodies had since found evidence of scores of additional murders. His confession led the police to launch Kardio- a special forensic investigation to determine the cause of death of the patients.

Each participant is said to have initially filled out questionnaires regarding their food and coffee intake, lifestyle and demographic information, and health history.

Feel free to pour yourself another cup of coffee.

Coffee is also rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic and other beneficial properties which may lower the risk of chronic liver disease and liver cancer, the researchers explained.

"Coffee drinkers should certainly not rest on their laurels".

Professor Metin Avkiran, of the British Heart Foundation, said: 'The best way to minimise your risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death is to concentrate on an overall healthy lifestyle - eat a balanced diet, stay active and don't smoke - rather than lining up the lattes'.
