Falcon rocket with satellite for Taiwan launches from Vandenberg

Satellite for Taiwan Launched from California

With a picturesque backdrop of a sunny and mostly clear sky, SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9 rocket late Thursday morning from Vandenberg Air Force Base.

The half-ton Formosat 5 satellite, one of SpaceX's lightest payloads yet, was deployed about 11 minutes after launch to its targeted sun-synchronous orbit 447 miles (720 km) above the ground. The launch was conducted through SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket. Formosat 5's launch was shuffled later in SpaceX's manifest for unexplained reasons.

With today's launch, it seems that SpaceX is picking back up its mission pace. As Falcon 9 was lifted off, the mission operations team at National Space Organization (NSPO) located in Hsinchu, Taiwan and the launch team at launch site cheered together for this special moment.

Chang said FormoSat-7 testing will begin later this year in November, and he pegged May or June 2018 as the tentative time for its launch from Florida.

An advanced ionospheric probe from the National Central University in Taiwan is also aboard Formosat 5. As of now, the company has already re-flown two of its used Falcon 9 boosters. Much smaller than Falcon 9, the original choice of launch vehicle made more sense given the satellite's small mass of approximately 500 kilograms.

More Closures Announced For National Retail Store
This included a decline of 9.4 percent for Kmart stores, and a decline of 13.2 percent at Sears stores, the company said. With a double digit comparable sales decline, the second quarter proved hard for Sears Holdings and its store network.

After the rocket puts the FORMOSAT-5 Earth observation satellite into low-Earth orbit, its first stage will attempt to land on a barge in the Pacific Ocean named "Just Read the Instructions".

SpaceX has been working to flawless its system of recovering rockets for reuse in future missions, saving millions of dollars in costs. That's more rockets than other country or space company in the world, including the rocket juggernaut Russian Federation, who has launched 11 rockets so far this year.

Next up for SpaceX's bi-coastal launch team is another Falcon 9 flight scheduled to blast off September 7 from pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Static fire test of Falcon 9 complete-targeting launch of FORMOSAT-5 from SLC-4E at Vandenberg AFB on August 24.
