Two River North murder suspects extradited; headed to Chicago

Olympians Share Their Most Embarrassing School Memories

Wyndham Lathem, 42, and Andrew Warren, 56, arrived in police custody to Chicago late Friday, according to Chicago police.

Wyndham Lathem, a U.S. citizen and a former Northwestern University professor, and Andrew Warren, an Oxford University employee from the United Kingdom, were charged with first-degree murder in Chicago, local media reported.

Authorities have said the attack on Cornell-Duranleau, a MI native who moved to Chicago a year ago, was so brutal that the blade of the knife investigators believe was used in the stabbing was broken. They could appear in court as early as Sunday.

Lathem was an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at Northwestern, while Warren is an employee of Somerville College, in the Oxford system, in Great Britain. Neither suspect was arraigned in California and police have not yet determined a date for their respective Chicago arraignments, Sweeney said. Lathem also reportedly sent a video to friends and family members apologizing.

Northwestern fired Lathem after he fled from police. His body was found only after an anonymous call to the building's front desk 15 hours after the incident. Authorities said that Cornell-Duranleau was stabbed over 40 times, and that the attack was so violent that the blade of the knife they believe was used in the attack was broken. Lathem was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Oakland, Calif., on August 4.
