Apple has a $1bn budget to find the next Game of Thrones

Apple preps $1bn war chest, adds Cherniss

Apple is set to invest $1 billion (€855m) in producing and procuring original content over the next year, according to a report in The WSJ.

Apple's intent to make a mark in original programming is quite evident from its $1 billion budget, which is about half of what dedicated content creators like HBO spent previous year and about the same as what Amazon spent in 2013.

While Apple may have the cool billion and know-how to get quality original programming out to customers, the question is if those same customers are comfortable paying yet another monthly fee to watch their shows.

Add to that Tim Cook's tech behemoth has also roped in two former Sony executives, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg a few months ago to manage this enormous amount of funding. Yesterday they hired former WGN America President Matt Cherniss, a former production exec at Warner Bros., to help with development.

Users will also be able accept or reject all suggestions at once (Tools Review suggested edits Accept all or Reject all). The suggest changes toggle should be enabled, and mobile suggestions should be made while using the suggestion mode .

Apple has been long rumored to be planning to make its own lineup of original video content for its own streaming service.

Apple's first forays into its own content, Late Late Show spinoff Carpool Karaoke and the reality show Planet of the Apps, haven't quite broken through in any meaningful way, although Apple's original content effort is still very young. If all goes well, this cash will be spent on 10 shows, though it's not yet clear what type of shows the Cupertino giant is looking to bring to the table. But these failings haven't deterred Apple from aiming bigger. If the report is accurate, then Apple could end up spending roughly $3 million to $4 million per episode, which would put it in line with HBO's per-episode budget for "Game of Thrones".

However, it will not be as easy as it sounds for Apple. Reach of the shows has also been limited to users with Apple Music subscriptions. One episode of Game of Thrones can cost more than $10 million to produce, while even comedies can cost over $2 million per episode.
