Couple transporting grill injured after SUV explodes when wife lights up cig, cops say

A man and his wife were burned when a gas grill in their auto exploded Sunday afternoon.

A couple have blown up their SUV in the middle of the road by lighting a cigarette while transporting a propane grill that was switched on.

The wife lit a cigarette as the vehicle was driving near the entrance to the Central Florida Fairgrounds.

Police said the grill, which was turned on, had a propane tank attached that was open and connected.

The couple, who weren't identified, had a barbecue grill in the back of their red Kia Sorento, Orlando Police Lt. Cindy Lane said.

Authorities say when the woman lit a cigarette, the tank exploded, causing the windows to shatter.

Both people inside the SUV sustained burns, but their injuries are not life-threatening.

Photos show the roof partially blown off and the windshield missing, in addition to dents all over the vehicle.
