Sir Mo Farah in numbers
2012 world youth champion Edris, 23, produced a strong charge on the final stretch to lift his first ever major senior world title in 13:32.79, leaving two-time Olympic 5,000 titlist and newly crowned 10,000m victor Farah, 34, to the second place in 13:33.22. The better man won.
Farah finished in 13:33.22, just failing to repeat his memorable Olympic double on the same track in 2012.
Farah was welcomed to the start line by another roar from the London Stadium crowd and urged them to keep going with a wave of the hand in the opening paces.
Having been pipped at the line by the unknown Ethiopian Ibrahim Jeilan in the 10,000m days earlier, Farah upgraded his silver to gold over the shorter distance, holding off a late charge from American Bernard Lagat.
"If I have crossed the line, and Mo Farah has done something wrong, then prove it".
Disappointment for Great Britain meant delight for Ethiopia, and indeed the US, with Olympic silver medalist Paul Chelimo powering through to take the bronze medal mere inches behind Farah in 13:33.30.
Farah retires from the sport at the end of August after the Diamond League final in Zurich.
NYPD officer's bulletproof vest saves his life in Brooklyn shooting
The mayor and police commissioner showed off the vest during a news conference and credited it with saving the officer's life. Police said officers were responding to a report of an emotionally disturbed person when a man opened fire.
But Edris kept going strongly and triumphed in 13mins 32.79secs, with Farah second in 13:33:22 and Paul Chelimo of the United States third.
Farah somehow found a bit of room on the inside of Kejelcha and Chelimo and, giving his all, the Nike Oregon Project runner managed to snatch the silver with Edris, whose closing speed was always going to be a threat, the clear victor. I didn't have a single bit left at the end. The fact is I've achieved what I have from hard work. Sometimes I find it weird how certain people write certain things to suit how they want to sell the story.
"I am the new champion for Ethiopia".
"It's not an excuse, but it took a lot more out of me than I realised", said Sir Mo.
"Sometimes I find it freaky how certain people write certain things to suit how they want to sell the story".
"If I was causing trouble I could get away with it because of that".
Chelimo fell with four laps to go on the wet track in Wednesday's semifinals but came back and qualified.
