Supreme Court will take decision on Article 35 (A): Nirmal Singh

Mehbooba hand-in-glove with BJP on 35A NC

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday expressed doubts over his successor Mehbooba Mufti's announcement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured her on protecting the Constitution's Article 35A which empowers the state legislature to declare permanent residents of the state and their privileges. She also met Home Minister, Rajnath Singh to discussed the issue. Since this is the basis of the agenda, no one can go against it.

He said that that it is all immaterial what Mehbooba said after meeting PM Modi and what matters the most is what PM told her in the meeting.

How would extending such gestures to a very few decorated families would change the demography of J&K or dilute the identity of people of J&K (Kashmiris) is not understood. "So the message that J&K is crown of India should be reiterated".

On Saturday, the NC categorically stated that it does not believe in Mehbooba's public utterances given her track record.

This comes at a time when the J&K alliance has become strained as the CM is fighting growing calls from her own ally BJP to repeal the law.

"What assurance did Mehbooba Mufti manage to get from the Prime Minister?" Senior BJP Leader Virendra Gupta, while speaking to PTI, said the time has come for Articles 35A and 370 to be struck down, as they promote a "separatist psyche" in the Valley.

Smugglers Throw Nearly 300 Refugees Into Yemen Sea
On Thursday, IOM reported that another smuggler forced some 160 people from a second boat, this time closer to shore. Crossing the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea is particularly risky because of strong currents and high winds.

The J&K unit of BJP has demanded Centre to side with the petitioners seeking the abrogation of the two articles.

He said that the PDP-BJP government had been formed on the Agenda of Alliance and "We are committed to it".

Addressin a presser in Jammu he said: "Jammu Dogras would be main sufferers if Article 35-A is abrogated".

"By talking about accommodating idea of J&K in Idea of India she is forgetting the fact that New Delhi by its proxies and taking Supreme Court route is trying to bring Kashmiris to the back foot and also intends to seek bargaining power for the final resolution of J&K".

The Kashmir University and Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education deferred the examinations which were scheduled to be held on Saturday. Train services were also suspended. The entire separatist leadership was earlier placed under house arrest.

Various other like-minded political, social and religious organisations and groups besides the lawyers' associations had endorsed the call. "There is hardly anything left in our special status and if Article 35 (A) is tampered with, we will cease to exist", Mehbooba added.
