Colossal new dinosaur species gets scientific name

Dinosaur found in Argentina could be world's largest

"Giving a scientific name is the symbol of conducting and finishing a scientific study in which we actually learn something from a new species", he told the event in NY by Skype from Patagonia. The team chose the second name in honor of a rancher family that housed them during their excavations.

Thus, P. mayorum took the mantle of biggest ever known dinosaur, previously held by another titanosaur called Argentinosaurus.

"Estimating the body weight of an extinct animal is a challenging task", says Diego Pol of the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio.

A skeleton of the dinosaur is already on display at the American Museum of Natural History in NY.

The 100-million-year-old fossils "represent the largest species described so far and one of the most complete titanosaurs", the paper's authors write, though one of the lead researchers acknowledges the difficulty of determining such a distinction. Patagotitan mayorum stretched a whopping 122 feet in length.

With a likely body mass of 69 tonnes, Patagotitan was more than 15% heavier than Dreadnoughtus, the largest titanosaur from which a femur (thigh bone) and humerus (forearm bone) have been preserved. The structure was so large that the dinosaur head almost goes into the hallway of the NY museum.

The giants measured about 37 meteres long with shoulders 6 metres high, dwarfing Tyrannosaurus rex.

Franklin could be season's first hurricane
Since Invest 99L isn't a closed circulation storm system, forecast modeling isn't very helpful in predicting where it will go. After landfall, Franklin will slowly dissipate over east-central Mexico bringing heavy bouts of rain and potential flooding.

If you're struggling to picture that, it's about seven elephants, or more than two buses, or half the width of a football pitch, or somewhere between a standard swimming pool and an Olympic pool.

"It was probably a massive slow-moving animals".

"Getting up. Walking around".

Titanosaurs feature a wide spectrum of body sizes, but the largest species have all been found in Patagonia, which suggests the region featured a unique combination of vegetation and climate conducive to the evolution of large bodies.

The researchers explain why the titanosaurs reached such great dimension by assuming it lived during an explosion of flowering plants that allowed the species to thrive.

Paleontologists have found the discovered the biggest creature to have ever walked the Earth.
